How to Use Relative Location
Remember back at the beginning of class when we learned how to say, "I am at the school"? You may have noticed that we never really learned to say where at the school we were. Like, "inside of" or "outside of" or "next to" or "on top of". That is because there is a particular structure we need for this. Well, the time has come for us to learn this structure! When we want to say things like:
"He's inside the house"
"I'm under the table"
"it's to the right of me"
We will use the following structure below:
subject 1 + zài + subject 2 (de) + position + (action)
Positions are words like "next to", "to the right of", "inside", "outside", etc.
In each of the examples below, take the time to appreciate and absorb the difference between the Chinese, Chinglish, and English.
Position words:
shàngmiàn - topside |
lǐmiàn - |
qiánmiàn - frontside |
zuǒbiān - leftside |
pángbiān - nearside (next to) |
xiàmiàn - underside |
wàimiàn - outside |
hòumiàn - backside |
yòubiān - rightside |
zhōngjiān - middle |
subject 1 + zài + subject 2 (de) + position + (action) |
