Expressing the Only Two Possibilities 不是bú Shì ⋯就是jiùshì⋯

To describe a situation as being one of only two possibilities, you can use the structure "不是bú shì A  就是jiùshì B", which literally means, "if it's not A, then it's B" in English. A and B can be verbs, adjectives, or nouns.

不是búshì A, 就是jiùshì B

Nǚrén búshì zàijiā zuò jiāwùjiùshì zài gōngsī gōngzuò.  

女人不是在家做家务就是在公司工作

Women either do household chores at home or work in the company.

Zhège xīngqí búshì jīntiān kāihuì jiùshì míngtiān kāihuì.

这个星期不是今天开会就是明天开会

This week, either there is a meeting today or there is a meeting tomorrow.

Tā chuān de yīfú búshì LV jiùshì Gucci.

他穿的衣服不是LV就是Gucci

The clothes he wears are either LV or Gucci.



Míngtiān shéi huì hé nǐ yīqǐ chūchāi? Búshì wǒ de jīnglǐ, jiùshì wǒ de tóngshì

明天谁会和你一起出差? 不是我的经理就是我的同事

Tomorrow, who will go on a business trip with you? Either my manager or my colleague.



Zhège fàndiàn de cài fēicháng nán chī, búshì tài xiánle, jiùshì tài làle.

这个饭店的菜非常难吃,不是太咸了就是太辣了

The food at this restaurant is very unpalatable, either too salty or too spicy.
