Expressing Frequency in Mandarin
First, I call this a TLDR to be cute, but if this doesn't cut it for you, please read the article. The following are some rules that break down some of the important details about frequency.
These will be used to express phrases like "I go out to eat 3 times a week"
1. Every Frequency Phrase Will Have a Verb, Period, and Frequency:
verb = go out to eat ( 去外面吃饭Qù wàimiàn chīfàn )
period = 1 week ( 一个星期Yīgè xīngqī)
frequency = 2 times ( 两次liǎngcì )
2. Frequency Will Come After the Verb, Like in English
This does mean we have to "split" the subject and object ( 吃三次饭chī sāncì fàn ). If this is too much to think about, then let it go for now; it is a REALLY minor detail, and Chinese speakers will still 100% understand you if you slip up.
3. Structure of Frequency
Subject + [time frame/period ] + [action] + #次cì + ([object]) |
Wǒ yīgè xīngqī zuò sāncì yújiā. ——> I (in) a week do three times yoga. 我一个星期做三次瑜伽。 |
Tā yītiān zhìshǎo dǎ liǎng cì yóuxì. ——> He (in) a day at least plays two times games. 他一天至少打两次游戏。 |
Nǐ duō cháng shíjiān yóu yīcì yǒng? ——> You what length of time swim one time "swim"? (how often do you swim?) |
Nǐ duō cháng shíjiān yùndòng yīcì? ——> You what length of time exercise one time? (how often do you exercise?) 你多长时间运动一次? |
Nǐ yīgè yuè lùyíng jǐ cì? ——> You (in a) month camp how many times? (How many times do you camp a month) 你一个月露营几次? |
|
4. Asking/answering How Often by Using 常常chángcháng,不常bùcháng,很少hěnshǎo
Nǐ chángcháng lùyíng ma? ——> You often camp? 你常常露营吗? |
Wǒ bù cháng pǎobù. ——> I not often run. 我不常跑步。 |
Wǒ hěn shǎo zuò fàn. ——> I rarely cook. 我很少做饭。 |
