Expressing Frequency in Mandarin

Expressing Frequency in Mandarin

First, I call this a TLDR to be cute, but if this doesn't cut it for you, please read the article.  The following are some rules that break down some of the important details about frequency.
These will be used to express phrases like "I go out to eat 3 times a week"

1. Every Frequency Phrase Will Have a Verb, Period, and Frequency:

verb = go out to eat ( 去外面吃饭Qù wàimiàn chīfàn )

period = 1 week ( 一个星期Yīgè xīngqī)

frequency = 2 times ( 两次liǎngcì )

2. Frequency Will Come After the Verb, Like in English

This does mean we have to "split" the subject and object  ( 吃三次饭chī sāncì fàn ).  If this is too much to think about, then let it go for now; it is a REALLY minor detail, and Chinese speakers will still 100% understand you if you slip up.

3. Structure of Frequency

Subject + [time frame/period ] + [action] + #次 + ([object])
yīgè xīngqī zuò sāncì yújiā. ——> I (in) a week do three times yoga.
一个星期三次瑜伽
yītiān zhìshǎo liǎng cì yóuxì. ——> He (in) a day at least plays two times games.
一天至少两次游戏

duō cháng shíjiān yóu yīcì yǒng? ——> You what length of time swim one time "swim"? (how often do you swim?)
多长时间一次

duō cháng shíjiān yùndòng yīcì? ——> You what length of time exercise one time? (how often do you exercise?)
多长时间运动一次
yīgè yuè lùyíng jǐ cì? ——> You (in a) month camp how many times? (How many times do you camp a month)
一个月露营几次
  • The 3rd and 4th sentences, we put 多长时间duōchángshíjiān (how long time = how often) as our [time frame/period] ; 多长时间duōchángshíjiān is our question word.
  • When using 多长时间duōchángshíjiān as our question word, our structure will be: Subject + 多长时间duōchángshíjiān + [action] + 一次yīcì + ([object]). We will always use "一次yīcì" when asking this kind of question.
  • In the last question, we use “as our question word—how many.

4. Asking/answering How Often by Using 常常chángcháng,不常bùcháng,很少hěnshǎo

chángcháng lùyíng ma? ——>  You often camp?
常常露营吗?
bù cháng pǎobù. ——> I not often run.
不常跑步。
hěn shǎo zuò fàn. ——> I rarely cook.
很少做饭。
