Chinese Question Word - nǎge

Chinese Question Word - nǎge

Before getting into comparing, let’s talk about how we ask “which” in Chinese. When asking which, for the most part, we will expect to have a “noun” followed by the "which." For example, which dress do you like, which color do you want etc. In Chinese, you must place a measure word in between the “which” and the “noun.”

+ measure word + noun

Nǐ xǐhuān jiàn qúnzi ——> You like which jiàn dress?

你喜欢哪件裙子?

A: Nǐ xiǎng mǎi shuāng xié——> You want to buy which shuāng shoes?
你想买哪双鞋?

B: Zhèshuāng xié hé nàshuāng xié, wǒ dōu xiǎng mǎi. ——> This pair of shoes and that pair of shoes, I both of them like. (I like to buy both the shoes (this and that)).
这双鞋和那双鞋,我都想买!

  • jiàn - measure word for tops, such as jiàn wài tào(coat), yī jiàn Txù(T-shirt)
  • shuāng - measure word for things that are in pairs such as shuāng xié(shoes), yī shuāng wàzi(socks)
  • Remember we learned that dōu is an adverb for expressing “all” or “both”, and dōu appears after the subject and before the verb. In the last sentence, you see “this pair of shoes” and “that pair of shoes” in the front of the sentence. We put them in the front because we want to emphasize the objects. For example, píngguǒ, lí hé xiāngjiāo, wǒ dōu xiǎng chī. (apple, pear, and banana, I all want to eat).
